Clinical Experience

As a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellow, you will spend time caring for a diverse athletic population including men and women of every age and athletic ability. You will also develop your expertise in diagnosing and managing medical illnesses and injuries related to sports and exercise including:

• injury prevention
• pre-participation evaluation
• management of acute and chronic illness or injury
• rehabilitation

Pittsburgh is renowned for its excellent professional, collegiate, and high school teams. Access to these teams allows us to offer our fellows the most diverse experiences available in the field today. In addition to treating athletes on the field and in the training rooms, fellows will have the opportunity to see patients during regularly scheduled sports medicine office hours and injury clinics.

Clinical time for both fellows includes the following:

• 1-2 half-days as primary provider at a sports medicine clinic per week
• one half-day of primary care clinic per week
• office time with sports medicine faculty and sports orthopedists throughout the year
• office time with foot and ankle specialists, hand specialists, and concussion faculty
• weekly training rooms at colleges and high schools and game coverage
• other sports event coverage that may include Pittsburgh Steeler Training Camp, Boston Marathon, Keystone State Games, and others
• exposure to surgery
• exposure to exercise physiology lab and compartment pressure testing
